Base Travel Fee ($5) + IRS Mileage Rate Roundtrip

Travel Notice: Per Maryland law, a notary public may charge the prevailing IRS mileage rate for business travel and a flat travel fee, calculated from the point the notary receives the call to the signer's location. These charges apply only for direct agreements between the notary and the signer, not when a hiring third party (i.e. attorney, title company, realtor, etc.) is involved.

Travel Fee & Mileage Policy

At The Signature Pros, our commitment to providing reliable and efficient notarial services to our valued customers is unwavering. We understand that there may be instances where, due to circumstances beyond our control, a notarial act cannot be performed. In such cases, we want to clarify our travel fee policy to ensure transparency and fairness to all our clients.

Notice of Notarial Act and Travel Fees

In accordance with Maryland law, the following notarial service fees apply for non-real estate documents that do not involve the issuance of title insurance:

* 8.00 per notarial act (in-person/non-real estate document)

When services are arranged directly between the notary and the signer, a flat travel fee and the IRS standard mileage rate for business travel may be charged. These fees are calculated from the point of dispatch (where the notary is located at the time of the call) to the appointment location (customer's choice - home, school, work, library, etc.) and are clearly itemized on the final invoice.

For services coordinated through third-party professionals—including but not limited to attorneys, paralegals, title companies, and real estate professionals—fees shall differ based on service agreements, document types, and assignment scope.

Additionally, real estate transactions involving title insurance are exempt from Maryland’s regulated fee caps for notarial acts.
In such cases, notarial fees are considered part of the overall settlement service charges and shall differ from the standard individual mobile notarization rates.

The Maryland Insurance Administration has authority to regulate the business practices of title insurance producers and companies—not individual service fees such as those for notary, courier, or document preparation services. These settlement-related charges are negotiated between the service provider and the party coordinating the transaction, and must be disclosed prior to closing.
All invoices are provided with clear itemization to maintain transparency and compliance with applicable laws.

A woman pondering the question - What is a notarial act?

What is a Notarial Act?

A notarial act is when a notary identifies (1) signer by means of government-issued identification with a photo and signature; verifies the signer's competency and awareness by direct interaction and observes that the signer is not under duress; asks the signer to take an oath or make a declaration. Then, the notary notarizes (1) notarial certificate (a.k.a. the notarial language on the document; could be seen more than once on one document) with his or her signature and commission stamp. Finally, the notary enters the signer's information into their journal. To perform (1) notarial act with (1) signer, the process could take approximately 10 to 15 mins.

How to Determine a Notarial Act

Notice: Documents intended for use within the United States may be notarized in person via mobile service, as long as the notarial certificate is in English. If your document does not include a notarial certificate, please ensure that you have selected/decided which type of notarial certificate is needed prior to the notaries arrival. The Signature Pros is not a law firm and our notaries are not attorneys. Therefore, we cannot provide you with any legal advice or draft and legal documents for any signer. You are welcome to review the explanations and sample type of notarial certificates here to help you in your decision-making process. If you are still unclear about how to determine a notarial act, connect with a staff member by giving us a call and selecting the option to speak with a staff member.
